The Mustard Festival kicked off on January 30, 2010 at the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, Napa Valley. I took a day trip to the valley on January 31, 2010 and found the wild mustard was in bloom already.
I drove along Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail for a while to scope out photo ops. Criss-crossing all the roads between the two major arteries is highly recommended.
I found this spot along one of the side roads and used a circular polarizer as well as a 3 f-stop soft graduated natural density filter to gain good contrast.

Before I talk about my photo walks I like to discuss a blog I came across on about good workshop instructors. With so many workshops to choose from, how does one decide which one might be the best fit? I talked to several people after they took a workshop and I was really not surprised to hear that the instructors taught very little, took the best spots at sunrise/sunset and proceeded to take their own shots. Workshop instructors should be 100% focused on their clients, this means not shooting. It is amazing at how many times I read forum comments on the web like, “shot this while leading my recent workshop”. When leading a workshop (photo tours might be a different story) there is no time to shoot, period!

I came across many workshops during my photography safaris and most of the time I saw the leader and instructors out shooting their own stuff as well. Instead they should be out there suggesting/helping with composition and/or camera settings. It seemed to me that a lot of the organizers were there to do their own photography and have the costs covered by workshop participants. I have not taken a workshop based on what I observed. I would much rather take a workshop from an instructor who loves to teach other people about photography.
Only once have I observed a workshop at Lundy Canyon, where the instructor went from client to client teaching and helping. He did not have a camera!

I am not qualified to give workshops, because I am not an expert on photography (composition, depth of field, f-stop etc), but I am excellent in giving photo walks and I will freely share my ‘secret spots’ with you. I am very familiar with Yosemite, the Eastern Sierra, Wine Country or California Coast. To find out more about taking a photo walk with me Contact Us
